12th century Muslim scientist, inventor, engineer and artist Ismail Al-Jazari ranks among history’s greatest geniuses for his many of inventions, which represent significant advances in engineering and robotics. In his book The Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices Al-Jazari details one hundred unique devices, including clocks, gears, pumps and robots, as well as their mechanisms and functions which he beautifully illustrates himself. Al-Jazari’s castle clock has been described as the first programmable analogue computer.
