Ibn Sina: One of the most influential Muslim scientists in the history of science is Abu ‘Ali al-Husayn ibn Sina (Abu Ali Sina, Pur Sina) who is better known in Europe by the Latinized name “Avicenna.” He is probably the most significant scientist in Islamic history and arguably the most influential philosopher of the pre-modern era. Ibn Sina who was born in Afshana near Bukhara, Iran [now Uzbekistan] in about 980 ad, is best known as a polymath, physician and philosopher. His major work in the field of medicine, the Canon (al-Qanun fi’l-Tibb), continued to be taught as a medical textbook in Europe and in the Islamic world until the early modern period. Also, in the field of philosophy, his major summa the Cure (al-Shifa’) had a decisive impact upon European scholasticism. Avicenna passed away in 1037 ad, in Hamadan, Iran.
